Bay Parkway neighbors Bishop Kearney High School and Calko Medical Center have teamed up to create the Bishop Kearney Medical Science and Professions Program, where students will get hands-on training in the field.

Bishop Kearney held an assembly on Monday, June 3 to explain that the program, which is two-pronged, is exclusively for its students, which is the only all-girls school in Brooklyn to offer one of this nature.

One segment of the program is “introductory” for the entire school, with monthly school assemblies featuring Calko doctors and professionals, as well as brief courses in radiology, medical records, what it takes to be a lab technician, EKGs and sonograms.

The other is exclusively for students who are seniors. Participants must be enrolled in science and math courses at Bishop Kearney. They will attend annual symposiums given by Calko doctors in their respective medical specialties and submit a reflective paper on it. Students will receive a certificate of participation as well as five school credits. College connections will also be explored.

Sister Thomasine Stagnitta explained that this is only an outline for the new program. Changes and additions will be made, with the goal of providing a four-year program for students.

Apprenticeships offer students the opportunity to learn how different fields operate, so that when you’re in college you have these experiences behind you,” she said. “They are very valuable.

Susan Bazik, a Kearney junior from Dyker Heights, said she was “really excited” about the program. “It is a good opportunity for students like myself to learn about the medical profession,” she said. “I think I am interested in the medical field, but this program will help me see what it truly means to work in that field.

Anna Cali, a member of Community Board 12 and founder of theNeighbors for the Preservation and Development of Southwest Brooklyn, was also at the assembly.

We are happy that the community has come together and that the girls at Bishop Kearney will have the opportunity to learn and grow with Calko,” she said. “Also, we know that Calko is very fortunate to have these young ladies from Bishop Kearney partnering with them because Kearney produces exceptional young women.
