Good morning. Today is the 156th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of June 5, 1902, had a story about the Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR’s) plans to put its street-level rail line from East New York to Bay Ridge below ground to avoid dangerous grade crossings. The line, now known as the Bay Ridge Freight Line, has traveled through an open “trench” since around 1910 and still carries freight across the borough and east into Nassau and Suffolk counties, although passenger service ended in the 1920s. For about 15 years, the route, although still owned by the LIRR, has been managed by the New York and Atlantic, a company that specializes in short-distance freight lines.

Well-known people who were born today include actor Chad Allen, Second Lady Jill Biden (wife of Vice President Joe Biden), actor Mark Wahlberg (“The Fighter,” “The Departed”) and TV journalist Bill Moyers.
