Spider-Man will be swinging in to Brooklyn Public Library’s Summer Reading Kickoff

Do your kids like Spider-Man? Then get them to Brooklyn Public Library’s 2013 Summer Reading Kickoff on Thursday, June 6th.

That’s when the cast of the hit Broadway musical “Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark” will be the special guests, with a free performance and a reading. The cast will also take souvenir photos with the kids.

It all happens at the Central Library at Grand Army Plaza from 10:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (All public schools will be closed for Brooklyn-Queens Day.)

The theme of this year’s Summer Reading program is “Hidden Treasures.” All day there will be guided activities by librarians along with face painting, balloon sculptures, musical performances and readings. Families will be able to pick up summer reading materials, including new library cards. (If it rains, the party will move indoors to the library’s Dweck Center.)

Not a kid? Brooklyn-affiliated celebrities will supply their recommended summer reading book lists to BPL to help inspire readers of all ages. Notables this year include Woody Allen and Norah Jones.

Experts say it’s important for kids to keep reading over the summer. According to BPL, summer breaks will cause the average student to lose up to one month of instruction (also known as “summer slide”), with disadvantaged students being disproportionately affected.
