Rain didn’t dampen Norwegian Day Parade fun
“Don’t Rain on My Parade,” is the title of a show-stopping number sung by Barbra Streisand in the Broadway musical “Funny Girl” and in the movie version of the show in the 1960s. Well, it rained on the Norwegian Day Parade in Bay Ridge on Sunday but it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of marchers one bit!
A steady downpour fell on the parade participants as they marched up Third Avenue to celebrate the anniversary of the signing of the Constitution of Norway in 1814. The march, which is sponsored by the Norwegian-American 17th of May Committee of Greater New York, is officially called the 17th of May Parade, but is also known to Bay Ridge residents as the Norwegian Day Parade. It traditionally takes place on the Sunday closest to May 17.
The marchers received loud cheers from small bands of spectators who lined the parade route and stood under umbrellas to catch all the action.
