Good morning. Today is the 141st day of the year. On this day in 1901, both branches of the “Municipal Assembly” (the city legislative body of that time) approved a subway tunnel under Flatbush Avenue, part of today’s Q and B route. The vote was almost unanimous, since both parties had instructed their officials to vote for the tunnel. One alderman, however, said that the Long Island Rail Road should pay part of the cost, presumably because many of the passengers on the tunnel route would transfer to and from the railroad, increasing rail traffic. The tunnel was not completed until 1918-1920, since so many subway projects were under way at the time.

Well-known people who were born today include actress Lisa Edelstein (“House”), U.S. Senator and comedian Al Franken (D-Minn.), signer-songwriter Leo Sayer, baseball manager Bobby Cox and actor Lawrence “Mister T” Tureaud (“The A Team.”)
