Homeowners do their spring cleaning this time of year, so why shouldn’t Brooklyn residents do the same for their sidewalks?

For Councilman Vincent Gentile, the answer is why not, indeed. Gentile (D-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Bensonhurst) is organizing two community cleanup campaigns in different areas of his council district.

On Saturday, May 11, Gentile is joining forced with Assemblyman Bill Colton (D-Gravesend-Bensonhurst) and Community Board 11 leaders to spruce up Bensonhurst. Volunteers are asked to meet on the corner of 18th Avenue and 81st Street at 10 a.m. Participants will be asked to sweep litter, among other tasks.

The second cleanup will take place the following Saturday, May 18 in Bay Ridge. The meet-up spot will be Third Avenue and 87th Street at 10 a.m. Gentile and Community Board 10 are the co-sponsors.

Gentile said the community-wide volunteer clean-up effort will raise awareness, appreciation and respect for the neighborhood. The new pristine sidewalks provide an incentive to residents to keeping their community clean, according to Gentile.

“The mission of this event is simple: together we’ll roll up your sleeves and clean up our streets. Maybe if your neighbor sees you picking up litter, it will inspire them to be more conscious of their surroundings and think twice before littering next time,” the councilman said. “Everyone loves a clean neighborhood, including our visitors. Let’s return our neck of the woods to its natural beauty and truly make this a real community-wide event!” Gentile said.

Volunteers can register family, friends, employer, and place of worship, group, organization or school for the event by emailing [email protected] or just by showing up on the day of the event. Volunteers will be given all the tools they need to clean up the streets, Gentile said.
