Good morning. Today is the 122nd day of the year. On this day in 1902, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported that two Democratic politicians “high up in Willoughby Street” had agreed to tear down two horse stables they owned and leased to the Street Cleaning Department and replace them with two new stables equipped with modern plumbing, electric lights and steam heating. The Eagle described the old stables as “old rattle-traps.”

The fact that the two politicians were described as “Willoughby Street men” implies that an influential Democratic clubhouse, similar to Manhattan’s Tammany Hall, was located on Willoughby Street.

Well-known people who were born today include British soccer star David Beckham, English balladeer Engelbert Humperdinck (“Release Me”), 1960s pop singer Leslie Gore (“It’s My Party,” “You Don’t Own Me”), and ethnic folksinger/character actor Theodore Bikel.
