4th Ave pedestrian struck by SUV dies

The woman who was hit by an SUV while crossing a Bay Ridge intersection April 30 has died from her injuries, according to police. Capt. Richard DiBlasio, commanding officer of the 68th Precinct, made the announcement on May 1. “Sad news. The pedestrian from yesterday’s collision on 82nd and Fourth passed away,” he stated.

The victim, described by police as an elderly Asian woman, was walking westbound and was crossing Fourth Avenue near 82nd Street at 10:39 a.m. when she was struck by a white SUV whose driver was making a right-hand turn from 82nd Street onto Fourth Avenue, a Police Department spokeswoman said.

The victim was taken to Lutheran Medical Center. “The driver remained at the scene,” the spokeswoman said.

As previously reported by www.brooklyneagle.com, the NYPD’s Highway Unit, which investigates serious accidents in which a person has died or been seriously injured, is conducting a probe into the accident. “Our investigation is continuing,” the police spokeswoman said.

Elizabeth Mitchell, who lives near the accident scene, contacted Councilman Vincent Gentile (D-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Bensonhurst) to express her concern with an ongoing situation she said involved a white SUV on her block, according to Brannan. In a statement released through Gentile’s office, Mitchell said an SUV she frequently sees speeding down her street has the same license plate as the vehicle involved in the April 30 accident. The SUV appears to be associated with a construction project on 82nd Street, Mitchell stated.

“The truck is on our block daily, double-parked in front of construction, blocking the sidewalk frequently. It is a big car with a big loud engine and I see and hear it pull from construction site and speed towards or through the light on Fourth Avenue nearly every single day,” she stated.

“I have been crossing the street with my children, right where this pedestrian was struck and it has stopped short in front of me,” Mitchell stated.

Mitchell stated that although there is no evidence the driver was speeding prior to hitting the pesdestrian, she believed that the motorist’s previous actions shoud be known.
