Brooklyn Today for April 25
Good morning. Today is the 115th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle for April 25, 1902, reported on a “parlor car romance” that led to marriage. It seems that Marie Elsie Ross of Brooklyn, the daughter of a millionaire lumber dealer, was in the “parlor car” (a luxury railroad car) of a train en route from California to Chicago. She was soon noticed by Chicagoan James Darden, a vice president of the American Can Company. The struck up a conversation, this led to a friendship, and as the Eagle hinted, “the friendship may have led to something dearer to them.” The two kept up a correspondence, and were finally married at the First Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn Heights.
Well-known people who were born today include actor Al Pacino “Scent of a Woman,” “Dog Day Afternoon,” “Godfather” movies), Brooklyn-born director Paul Mazursky (“Harry and Tonto,” “An Unmarried Woman,” “Scenes from a Mall”), actress Renee Zwellinger (“Cold Mountain,” ‘Miss Potter,” “Chicago”, )basketball player Tim Duncan and former U.S. Senator John Kyl.
