Markowitz endorses Quinn for mayor
If you thought Borough President Marty Markowitz would endorse any of his fellow Brooklynites in the mayor’s race, fuhgeddaboutit!
Markowitz surprised the New York political world on Thursday with his endorsement of City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, bypassing Public Advocate Bill deBlasio and former Bay Ridge councilman Sal Albanese, both of whom call Brooklyn home.
In his April 18 announcement, Markowitz described Quinn’s “unique ability” to understand New Yorkers.
Quinn, who lives in Manhattan, posted the borough president’s endorsement on her campaign website.
“For the past seven years, I’ve known Christine Quinn as a visionary City Council Speaker,” Markowitz said.
“Under Speaker Quinn’s brilliant leadership, the City Council has tackled the most pressing challenges facing our city—building more affordable housing, expanding early childhood education and cutting red tape for small businesses. Here in Brooklyn, Speaker Quinn has helped create thousands of jobs in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, helped launch the East River Ferry and supported critical day care and after school programs for our children. Chris has the unique ability to understand every New Yorker working to achieve their aspirations and I am thrilled to announce my support of the next Mayor of New York City,” he said.
“Marty Markowitz, a lifelong public servant, has worked tirelessly for the 2.6 million Brooklynites he represents. He has been responsible for transforming Brooklyn into the robust and dynamic destination it is today,” Quinn said upon accepting the endorsement.
“He has a mile-long list of accomplishments, from bringing new jobs to the Greenpoint-Williamsburg and downtown Brooklyn areas, improving access to quality education by helping to create two new Brooklyn schools, and protecting our older New Yorkers by fighting to keep senior centers open when they were threatened with budget cuts. Marty has undoubtedly made Brooklyn what it is today, a world-renowned place to live, work and raise a family. I am proud to receive the support of such a dynamic leader,” the council speaker said.
