Construction to begin on Fifth Avenue bridge

The Fifth Avenue bridge that goes over Greenwood Cemetery near 35^th Street is about to get a makeover.

Beginning on Monday, April 1 the Department of Transportation will start a complete rehabilitation of the bridge, including replacement of asphalt on the bridge deck and approaches; concrete sidewalk and curb repairs; pointing stone masonry and various utility repairs.

The work will require the closure of one half of the bridge roadway and the adjacent sidewalk at a time. During construction, the open side of the bridge will be open to two-way traffic. Work will be performed in two stages. When the first half is finished, work will commence on the other side.

Inside the work zone, a temporary walkway will be provided adjacent to the work zone on the west side. No parking will be allowed in the area, as well.

DOT said that work will be done during the day, Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. No night or weekend work is anticipated.

All of the construction is estimated to be finished by July.
