Brooklyn teen wins NY Life Scholarship

The excitement of being a freshman in college just got a little sweeter for Basil Lloyd Anderson, thanks to a scholarship from New York Life that honors the Brooklyn native for his community leadership and strong GPA.

The scholarship is awarded to five full-time undergraduates of African-American descent who are majoring in business while also remaining active in their home communities.

Anderson, who last year graduated from Pacific High School in Brooklyn, is studying accounting at Virginia State University, from where he hopes to eventually graduate with a masters degree.

“Once I graduate, my plan is to open my own business in Brooklyn,” said Anderson. “If successful enough, I also hope to open various different organizations that are devoted to making sure children are on the right path to college. . . After achieving my goals, I can help other people achieve theirs.”

He added that he is grateful to the PUSH For Excellence Foundation, New York Life, and Jason Robinson for reaching out to him “and giving me a chance to further my education.”

Although Anderson’s studies require him to live in Petersburg, Virginia during the school year, Anderson takes every opportunity “to go back home and put some time into the community” by volunteering at a local day care. “In doing so, my goal is to guide younger children in the right direction.”

“Brooklyn has been extremely important in my success,” he added. “I am motivated by the thought of one day being able to make my city a better place.”
