Good morning. Today is the 73rd day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of March 14, 1905, carried an article saying that the state legislature had passed a bill to demolish the old Brooklyn Penitentiary and Workshop in Crow Hill, now known as Crown Heights. The prison had been built in 1846, when Crown Heights was a remote area with mainly farms nearby.

The prison was demolished in 1907 and replaced by Brooklyn Prep, an elite Catholic high school. The school, which is Curtis Sliwa’s alma mater, went under around 1970, but its stately building survives as part of the Medgar Evers College complex.

Well-known people who were born today include actor Michael Caine (“The Cider House Rules,” “Hannah and Her Sisters”), U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn (D-Okla.), actor Billy Crystal (“Analyze This,” “When Henry Met Sally”), music producer Quincy Jones and actress Rita Tushingham (“Dr. Zhivago,” “A Taste of Honey”).
