With nearly eight decades of serving Brooklyn residents under its collective belt, the Bay Ridge Federal Credit Union celebrated its new location on Friday, March 8.

Joined by Borough President Marty Markowitz, State Senator Marty Golden, Assemblymember Peter Abbate and a representative of City Councilmember Vincent Gentile, credit union executives cut the ribbon on the spanking new facility at 1750 86th Street.

Gene Brody, the president of the credit union, told the assembled group, “This is a very special occasion for us,” with the new headquarters, “Really the product of some tremendous people.”

Brody recalled the credit union’s long history, remarking that it had been “started with very humble beginnings by immigrants in 1934.” Its first location was East New York, then East Flatbush. In 1972, the credit union had moved to Midwood, then in 1992 to Bay Ridge, where it remained until the current move to Bensonhurst.

“We are saddened you had to leave Fourth Avenue,” noted Golden, “but happy for you because you grew.” The “increased employment,” he added, helps not only the neighborhood, “but New York City and the state as a whole.”

Markowitz concurred. “The better you do, it means the better Brooklyn is doing,” he remarked. “This is a gorgeous location, here at the cutting edge of the ethnic communities that are growing by leaps and bounds.”
