Good morning. Today is the 65th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of March 6, 1944, described the last day of elevated train service over the Brooklyn Bridge. The cars that ran over the bridge were wooden “gate” cars, with open platforms at both ends.
At one time, most of the Brooklyn elevated lines – the Fulton Street, the Myrtle Avenue, the Fifth Avenue and the Lexington Avenue – fed into the tracks over the bridge, which terminated at a huge elevated station near City Hall. But many of those Brooklyn lines were torn down in 1940, leaving only the Myrtle and the Lexington.

Service on the remaining lines was cut back to Jay Street, the Manhattan terminal was torn down, and the former “el” tracks were converted to trolley tracks. Those, in turn, were removed in 1950 and paved over. Trains, however, continue to rumble over the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges.

Well-known people who were born today include actress Connie Britton, singer-guitarist Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd, comedian D.L. Hughley and actor Ben Murphy.
