The Bay Ridge AARP has announced two locations in the southwest Brooklyn area where free income tax assistance is available, now through April 15: Mondays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at St. Patrick’s Rectory, 9511 Fourth Avenue, contact phone number: 718-238-6600; and Fridays, (except Good Friday) 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Our Lady of Angels Rectory, 7320 Fourth Avenue, contact phone number: 718-836-7200.

Both sites allow walk-ins, and offer the option of e-filing. The service is available to citizens age 60 and older, who should be in the low to middle income range. Since it was near Valentine’s Day, the start of the Lunar New Year and Lincoln’s Birthday, the group held mini-commemorations to highlight each event. For Valentine Day, members were served a sweetheart cake and had wrapped candy kisses on each table.

For the Lunar New Year, AARP Recording Secretary Linda Orlando brought out a miniature oriental gong, spoke about how it brought good luck and had it struck by AARP member Mae Dunn.

AARP President Peter Killen took to the mike wearing a Lincoln-era black stovepipe hat and read the Gettysburg Address. This year is the Sesquicentennial of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address as well as of the Emancipation Proclamation.

By the way, Orly — who also pens an advice column for this paper — is also sashaying down the aisle on March 10 to marry her Greek prince, Alex Diamantopoulos, who owns the Donut Stop Restaurant on Third Avenue.

Fort Hamilton High School senior Anastasia Tzanides has been selected as NY1/Time Warner Cable Business Class Scholar Athlete of the week. According to NY1 reporter Anthony Pascale

She is also vice president of the school’s student government, plays a French horn in the school’s marching band and is helping to organize a Lacrosse team. Tzanides’ proud pop, Kirk

From a historical perspective, an interesting sidebar about a possible Fort Hamilton High School Lacrosse Team is that the site where the school campus is located was once owned by the Crescent Athletic Club, where they had a world-class Lacrosse team.

Russell Gallo has stepped down as president of the Brooklyn Young Republicans Club and former club Vice President Diana Sepulveda was recently elected to the helm of the GOPers.

Sepulveda also serves as the vice chair of the statewide New York Young Republicans organization. Gallo was voted in as the new treasurer. Frank Morales and Sherry DeSantis are vice president and secretary respectively.

U.S. Representative Michael Grimm’s key staffer Liam McCabe has been named president of the Brooklyn South Conservative Party Club. The club, formerly known as the Eugene Walsh Conservative Club, recently held its annual presidents’ dinner at the Dyker Beach Park Golf Course clubhouse.

Among the guest speakers were mayoral candidates Joseph LhotaAldolfo Carrion and George McDonald. Honorees were New York State Conservative Party Chair Michael Long and U.S. Representative Peter King.

State Senator Marty Golden’s long time Press Secretary and Deputy Chief of Staff John Quaglione has tossed his chapeau (yes, I know he doesn’t wear a hat!) into the ring to try and unseat veteran city lawmaker, Councilmember Vinnie Gentile.

The Committee to Elect John Quaglione is holding a fundraiser on Monday, March 11, at 6:30 p.m., at the new Vicolo Restaurant, 8530 Third Avenue. Tickets are $150 each, Call 347-560-5555 or email [email protected] for reservations. John is married to Assistant Principal Kerry Izzo.
