The landscape of health care in Brooklyn is changing by the minute. First there was the news that Long Island College Hospital was closing. Then came word that a judge had issued an order to temporarily stop the closure.

In another development, Maimonides Medical Center officials announced that the Borough Park-based hospital is now part of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. The officials also announced that they had also entered into a new partnership with Montefiore Medical Center.

Maimonides and Einstein http://www.einstein.yu.edu/ signed an affiliation agreement with the goal of advancing medical education and research, according to officials. Under terms of the agreement, Maimonides will become a university hospital and will serve as the Brooklyn campus of Einstein.

“These agreements build upon current relationships and better positions Maimonides for future success,” Pamela Brier, president and CEO of Maimonides. “As Einstein’s Brooklyn Campus, we will strengthen our teaching programs and fortify physician recruitment. As a strategic partner with Montefiore, we will better prepare for new models of health care delivery,” Brier said.

Maimonides physicians who teach and supervise students will receive faculty appointments at Einstein, and participate on faculty committees and in faculty development programs.

Two trustees from each institution will serve on each other’s boards.

“Maimonides Medical Center offers a superb environment for training Einstein students to become the competent and compassionate physicians the health care system of the future demands,” said Dr. Allen M. Spiegel, dean of Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

“The partnership between Einstein and Maimonides http://www.montefiore.org/ will make two outstanding institutions even stronger,” Spiegel said.

The alliance of Montefiore and Maimonides will allow the two institutions to work together to establish programs of clinical excellence, expand research capabilities and ensure that all patients have access to the full range of clinical services – from primary care to advanced specialty care, according to officials from both hospitals.

The strategic alliance will capitalize on the strengths of each institution and allow both to better prepare for new models of health care delivery in the future, officials said.

“Our agreement with Maimonides is based on common values and a shared commitment to provide patients with less fragmented, improved care,” said Dr. Steven M. Safyer, president and CEO of Montefiore. “The healthcare system as a whole is facing many challenges.  We must grow and learn together in order to continue to improve patient care and outcomes,” he said.

Maimonides Medical Center has 711 beds and over 70 subspecialty programs. Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University received over $160 million in awards from the National Institutes of Health in diabetes, cancer, liver disease, and AIDS, as well as other areas.

Through its affiliation with Montefiore Medical Center, the University Hospital for Einstein, and six other hospital systems, the College of Medicine runs one of the largest post-graduate medical training programs in the country, offering 155 residency programs to more than 2,200 physicians in training.
