Good morning. Today is the 58th day of the year. On this day in 1903, linemen from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers went on strike in New York and New Jersey, crippling telephone services especially in the “suburban districts” of Flatbush and Bensonhurst.

“In Brooklyn, it is estimated that hundreds of customers are still without telephone services,” the Eagle read. Today, it would probably be hundreds of thousands. In 1903, people who had telephones were still a minority, but the number was growing rapidly. By 1905, there were 2.2 million phones in the United States.

Well-known people who were born today include actor Adam Baldwin (“Full Metal Jacket”), singer Michael Bolton, broadcast journalist Charlayne Hunter-Gault, consumer advocate and former presidential candidate Ralph Nader, actress Joanne Woodward (“The Three Faces of Eve,’ ‘Mrs. and Mrs. Bridge”) and former basketball player James Worthy.
