Good morning. Today is the 56th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle for Feb. 25, 1902, included a report on a train wreck on the Brooklyn Bridge. Nowadays, trains don’t traverse the Brooklyn Bridge. But in those days, all Brooklyn elevated lines, including the ancestors of today’s Fulton Street, Brighton Beach, West End, Sea Beach and Culver subway lines, went over the bridge, terminating at a long-gone terminal near City Hall.

One train, which apparently went out of control, rammed into the back of another one. The damage was slight and there were no injuries, but it took more than an hour to clean up the debris, inconveniencing passengers.

Today, subway trains go over the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges (neither of which were around at the time of the accident) or through tunnels under the East River. The last elevated train traversed the Brooklyn Bridge in 1944.

Well-known people who were born today include actor Sean Austin, actress Diane Baker, actor Tom Courtenay, director Neil Jordan, TV jorunalist Bob Schieffer, basketball player Joakim Noah and talk show host Sally Jessy Raphael.
