State Sen. Marty Golden is making his mayoral pick early. The New York Post reported on Feb. 20 that Golden (R-C-Bay Ridge-southern Brooklyn) has decided to endorse former Metropolitan Transportation Authority chairman Joe Lhota to succeed Michael Bloomberg at City Hall.

Golden, who has been around politics a long time, told the Post that he believes Lhota is the only Republican candidate with a serious chance to win the mayoral race. Golden has been an elected official for 15 years, first as a city councilman and currently as a state senator.

The New York Post described Golden as the dean of New York City’s Republican elected officials.

Golden touted Lhota’s experience in government as a reason he would make a good mayor. Prior to his chairman ship of the MTA, Lhota was a deputy mayor in the Giuliani Administration.

Lhota is having better luck with Golden than he did with another prominent Republican, former Staten Island borough president Guy Molinari. The Staten Island Advance reported that Molinari had been set to endorse the former MTA chairman but changed his mind because he was offended with Lhota’s campaign wouldn’t return his phone calls.

Lhota isn’t the only candidate seeking the Republican nomination for mayor. Supermarket mogul John Catsimatidis and former Bronx borough president Adolfo Carrion are also courting the GOP. Carrion, a former Democrat, is also seeking the Independence Party endorsement.

Lhota is scheduled to be a guest speaker at the Brooklyn South Conservative Club’s President’s Day Dinner at the Dyker Beach Golf Course Catering Hall on Feb. 21.

On the Democratic side of the mayor’s race, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Comptroller John Liu, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, former comptroller Bill Thompson, and former Bay Ridge councilman Sal Albanese are all running.
