He’s a soccer star who gets a “kick” out of helping others!

Claudio Reyna, former captain of the New York Red Bulls soccer team, joined Councilwoman Sara Gonzalez (D-Sunset Park-Red Hook) and other officials at a coat drive held in Sunset Park on Feb. 19.

The coat drive, which took place in the offices of HealthPlus/Amerigroup, the insurance company that assists low-income families, was highly successful, according to Gonzalez, who said that all 300 coats that had been donated were distributed within three hours.

The coat drive was co-sponsored by the New York Red Bulls, HealthPlus/Amerigroup, and Gonzalez.

Reyna represented the United States national team in four World Cups from 1994 through 2006, serving as team captain in 2002 and 2006. He was the first American player to be selected to the FIFA All World Cup team for his performance during the 2002 World Cup in South Korea. He played his last professional season as captain of the New York Red Bulls.

Upon retiring, he established the Claudio Reyna Foundation to promote the sport of soccer and to fight poverty.

“What a pleasure it was to meet Claudio!” Gonzalez said “I am so impressed by people who have achieved success and then dedicate themselves to helping others. In these tough times, this gesture was most welcome and surely needed,” she said.
