BKLYN DESIGNS joins new citywide expo: ‘NYCxDESIGN’
Taking a page from the book of BKLYN DESIGNS, which draws thousands annually to its showcase of Brooklyn-based furnishing designers and manufacturers, New York City officials announced on Thursday a new event — “NYCxDESIGN.”
The five-borough happening will showcase and promote the city’s design disciplines such as architecture, graphic design, furniture and fashion design – areas which have “enormous potential for economic growth,” officials said.
NYCxDESIGN will be held from Friday, May 10 through Tuesday, May 21, and will kick off with BKLYN DESIGNS, which runs in DUMBO from May 10-12 this year.
NYCxDESIGN also include the Frieze Art Fair on Randall’s Island, the International Contemporary Furniture Fair at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, and a host of events across all five boroughs, including some in public parks.
Areas of design will include architecture, graphic design, fashion design, product design and manufacturing, industrial design, interior design, interaction design and landscape and urban design.
“NYCxDESIGN will help demonstrate that New York City is the design capital of the world,” Speaker Christine Quinn said in a statement. “All five boroughs are home to a staggering amount of design talent in a wide range of disciplines, and this inaugural, city-wide event will help harness this potential and turn it into a tool for economic growth.”
Deputy Mayor for Economic Development Robert Steel said, “New York’s robust design community is one of our competitive advantages, and showcasing the depth and breadth of our talent will encourage even more growth in this strategic industry.”
The event is being produced by the City Council in conjunction with a 33-member steering committee, which includes leaders from cultural institutions, design schools and firms, designers and government officials, organizers said.
