Mark your calendars: on Friday, March 1, Red Hook’s biggest supermarket will be back in business at 480 Van Brunt Street, clean, dry, and fully-stocked!

Fairway Market made the announcement on Twitter on February 5, declaring that they’ll return “stronger” than ever, they’ve “missed” everyone, and they are thrilled to be back.

“Our store in Red Hook is a cornerstone for that whole neighborhood. All the people shop in our store [and] all the store owners rely on Fairway to bring in foot traffic,” said Fairway founder Howie Glickberg. “I’m so proud of what we’ve done… The whole store was wiped out and in three months we’re going to be back up and running.”

Residents and business owners have missed them, too. Being without a local grocery store in a neighborhood with limited public transportation is hard enough under normal circumstances, but in the aftermath of a catastrophic storm, with resource already strained and in short supply, it was incredibly difficult.

City officials also cheered the news of Fairway’s impending reopening. Council Speaker Christine Quinn thanked Glickberg for “heroic corporate citizenship” post-Sandy.

“Your answer was always yes” to city and community requests for donations, gushed Quinn, who noted that Fairway contributed to a Red Hook community Thanksgiving dinner, ensured that close to 400 employees remained on the payroll, and provided shuttle bus transportation for employees who were temporarily reassigned to other Fairway stores in the city.

“Even though you were financially impacted by Sandy,” Quinn added, “you gave and gave and gave… Thank you very much.”
