76 Precinct Cop of the Month helped save a man’s life
Police Officer Kenia Marte received the 76th Precinct’s January Cop of the Month award for her composure and quick thinking when encountered with a 55-year-old man having a heart attack in his car and medical help still on its way.
It was around 1:35 p.m. on Tuesday, January 22, when Marte, a five-and-a-half year veteran of the NYPD, was flagged down by a frantic woman at Schermerhorn and Nevins Streets during a patrol with her sergeant. The woman led Marte to her husband, who was convulsing in his car.
According to Captain Jeffrey Schiff, Marte was able to see, in the man’s eyes and minute hand gestures, that he had nitroglycerine pills in his hand, which he had tried to take, but was too incapacitated to do so himself. So she placed two of the pills under his tongue and had him swallow it before she began CPR until emergency medical technicians arrived.
