Brooklyn Eagle’s legal correspondent enjoys historic inauguration day in Washington

It was chilly and crowded but, the sun was out, and the attending public was in Inauguration fervor. I had an official ticket (standing) and headed to the appropriate section around 8 a.m., three-and-a-half hours before the ceremonies began. I was turned away to an overflow section; apparently the officials let the wrong ticket holders into my designated area and it filled up very quickly. I did not let that deter me from seeing what I came there for.

I hopped two tall fences, skirted past cops and ended up as close as possible without a seated ticket. Sen. Chuck Schumer was the Master of Ceremonies (thank you, Sen. Schumer, for my ticket). It was a treat to hear Merle Evers. Her husband Medgar Evers was a pioneering civil rights leader and she continued his work after his assassination.

Watching President Obama take the oath of office for the final time brought a tear to almost everyone’s eyes.
