Two police officers were honored as Cops of the Month at the 62nd Precinct Community Council meeting on January 15 for getting two serial robbers of the street.

Police Officers Anibelka Perpinal and Viken Markarian were responding to a robbery at Bay Parkway and 86th Street on a December afternoon. At this location, there were three prior knifepoint robberies where cellphones were stolen. In one case, a victim was assaulted and pushed to the ground.

The quick-thinking officers saw two men who matched the description of the men they were looking for and apprehended them. After they were positively identified by victims, the 21-year-old and 23-year-old white males were placed under arrest.

Both perps live within the confines of the 62nd Precinct. One is still incarcerated.

Since the amount of robberies in this command increased by 22.7 percent between 2011 and 2012, this arrest was very important, said Deputy Inspector James Rooney, commanding officer of the 62nd Precinct

“I would like to thank them for putting an end to a very dangerous pattern,” Rooney said.

The next meeting of the 62nd Precinct Community Council will take place on Tuesday, February 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the station house on the corner of Bath Avenue and Bay 22nd Street.
