Good morning. Today is the 16th day of the year. On this day in 1901, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported that there had been two serious fires within the past two days in Coney Island. “It is the opinion of many,” said the Eagle, “that someone has been going around applying matches to buildings.” Both fires were started in buildings that were currently unoccupied. One of the buildings had previously been occupied by the Coney Island Sporting Club, which had hosted several important boxing matches.

Well-known people who were born today include dancer-choreographer Debbie Allen (“Fame”), opera singer Marilyn Horne, author William Kennedy (“Ironweed,” ‘Roscoe”), country singer Ronnie Milsap, former baseball player Jack McDowell and baseball player Albert Pujois.
