NYC school bus strike on hold, for now

Before schools broke for the holidays, Mayor Michael Bloomberg warned of “a strong possibility” that the union representing many school bus drivers would call a strike that would disrupt yellow bus service for more than 152,000 schoolchildren.
On Thursday, however, New York City schools spokesperson Erin Hughes told the New York Daily News that the city remains optimistic that the school bus unions “will do the right thing for our students and not consider a strike.”
The city continues to take “precautions,” Hughes said, providing extra MetroCards to schools in the event of a strike. Companies that operate yellow buses were also posting job ads seeking replacement drivers, according to the News.
