“It is getting harder and harder to find homes for these pets,” said Mary Jo Tobin, founder of Love Wanted, a Bay Ridge-based group that seeks to match rescue animals with loving families.

The slow economy means that many people don’t have the money to feed and care for an animal in their home, Tobin said. It is a problem in many parts of the country. According to a report in EagleTribune.com, animal rescue organizations in New Hampshire have had to change strategies in recent years.

Still, Tobin, a real estate saleswoman who founded Love Wanted six years ago, is undaunted. She is determined to find homes for as many dogs and cats as she can.

Love Wanted, which holds periodic pet adoption fairs in Bay Ridge throughout the year, hosted a per-holiday event Dec. 22 outside Trinity Lutheran Church on Third Avenue and 90th Street. The dogs and cats that were put up for adoption were from animal shelters in New York and Long Island.

“We found homes for 17 pets,” Tobin reported. “That means we freed up cage space for 17 animals in shelters,” she boasted. Tobin was referring to the fact that since 17 animals found homes and did not have to be returned to the shelters, it meant that there would not be space in those shelters to bring in 17 animals off the street.

Since its inception in 2006, Love Wanted has arranged for more than 1,700 animals to be placed with families, Tobin said.

The group is planning its next pet adoption fair on Feb. 16, although a location not been announced.

Tobin offered tips to anyone interested in coming to the next fair. A prospective pet owner must be 18 years of age or older. The person must provide proof that he or she lives in a building that allows pets. The proof could come in the form of a lease or a letter from the landlord allowing pets in the building.
