The deadline for Sandy-related food stamps is Tuesday
More than a month since Superstorm Sandy, many New Yorkers living in areas devastated by the storm are unaware that they may be eligible for special disaster-related food stamps — and the deadline to apply is Tuesday.
The program — called Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) — supplies special food assistance to households that would not ordinarily receive benefits. This is particularly important for people living in hard-hit neighborhoods in Coney Island, Red Hook, Gerritsen Beach, Staten Island and Far Rockaway.
Officials estimate that 30,000 New York City households are eligible, totaling approximately $13 million in aid if they all apply.
