Public Advocate Bill de Blasio is standing by his wife Chirlane McCray as they speak out in TV interviews about the article McCray penned for Essence magazine in the 1970s entitled, “I Am a Lesbian.”

As reported by the New York Daily News, “Chirlane wrote an incredibly powerful article, and it was brave, and I admire her for it,” de Blasio said. “But when we met, we fell in love with each other. People, I think, should respect that.” All types of families should be accepted, the couple said.

De Blasio and his wife, who live in Park Slope, have been married for 20 years and have two children.

While numerous New Yorkers – including Mayor Bloomberg — have come out in support of the couple, the New York Post ran a cartoon showing de Blasio wearing women’s lingerie, in bed beside McCray while she was speaking on the phone about how she used to be a lesbian.

The cartoon was penned by Sean Delonas, known for depicting President Obama as a chimp, according to Edge.

Council Member Jumaane D. Williams said in a statement that the Post “should be ashamed of itself.”
