Menorahs light up for Chanukah across Brooklyn starting Saturday

Chanukah (or Hanukkah), the eight-day Jewish “festival of lights” begins at sundown Saturday, and numerous menorah lightings are taking place around Brooklyn.

Brooklyn’s largest menorah lighting (with live music and free latkas!) takes place at the Grand Army Plaza entrance to Prospect Park. Come by at around 6 p.m. to witness the lighting of the 32-foot-tall menorah (the largest allowed by Jewish law). On Saturday, the annual lighting of the giant menorah in the plaza at Brooklyn Borough Hall, sponsored by Congregation B’nai Avraham, gets started around 6 p.m.

In addition, a Chanukah celebration featuring a Grand Chanukah Drum Circle, latkas, gifts (and Borough President Marty Markowitz) takes place at 5 p.m. Monday at Borough Hall Plaza. The ceremony will be led by Rabbi Aaron L. Raskin of Congregation B’nai Avraham and joined by Rabbi Simcha Weinstein and Paul Amit, a parent from Kiddie Korner who will light the menorah from a cherry picker. Yanky Flusberg and Kiddie Korner will provide musical entertainment.

Lighting of the menorah at the Pearl Street Triangle in DUMBO begins December 8 at 5 p.m., sponsored by the Chabad of DUMBO.

On Sunday in Crown Heights, bring the kids to Hanukkah deLIGHT at the Jewish Children’s Museum, 792 Eastern Parkway on from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event includes fire spinning by Dancing Djinn, an interactive oil pressing workshop, and even a deep-fried cookie demonstration. See www.jcm.museum
