For members of the John Dewey High School family, damage to the school by Hurricane Sandy was just the beginning; many of its alumni were affected by the storm, as well.

To help Dewey alumni living in Staten Island, fellow alumni have organized a fundraiser to take place on Saturday, December 15 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Dugout Pub, 4029 Hylan Boulevard in Staten Island. There will be live music, stand-up comedy, a DJ, a 50/50 raffle and a Chinese auction to raise funds in addition to the door price, which is $50 for adults 21 and over; $20 for kids aged 11 to 20. Kids under 10 are free. The event is family-friendly and includes an open bar and hors d’ouevres.

Proceeds will go to Dewey alumni affected by Sandy and to Rockin’ Relief, an organization formed to benefit those hit by Sandy.

In addition, the John Dewey Alumni Association, which consists of alumni from every decade and former faculty, also set up a Sandy Relief Fund just days after the storm, coordinating via e-mail and Facebook.

The JDAA is still collecting items for those in need. For more information or to make donation, visit http://www.johndeweyalumni.org/. Any checks or money orders can be sent to Grand Central Station P.O. Box 4224, New York, New York 10163-4224.
