Firefighters back Malliotakis for 2nd assembly term
Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R-Bay Ridge-Staten Island), running or her second term in office, has picked up endorsements from unions representing firefighters.
Malliotakis has been endorsed by the Uniformed Firefighters Association (UFA), the Uniformed Fire Officers Association (UFOA), and the Uniformed EMTs, Paramedics & Fire Inspectors Union.
The announcement of the endorsements took place during a press conference the assemblywoman held outside Engine 161, a Staten Island firehouse that had been threatened with closure by the Bloomberg Administration earlier this year. The union representatives said that their support for Malliotakis was due in large part or her efforts to keep the firehouse open.
The assemblywoman’s district, the 64th Assembly District, includes parts of Bay Ridge and Staten Island.
“Assemblywoman Malliotakis has been a champion for public safety. She has stood side by side with the UFA to support the funding of firehouses that were targeted for closure. Her track record clearly shows her understanding of the value of local fire houses within the community,” said Eric Bischoff, UFA Staten Island trustee.
“Throughout her first term in the legislature, Assemblywoman Malliotakis has stood for New York City’s firefighters and their families. We’re proud to support her re-election,” said UFOA President Al Hagan.
Malliotakis said she was grateful for the endorsements. “The people of Brooklyn and Staten Island rely on the courageous heroes of the FDNY and EMS to protect their homes, property, and most importantly, their families. If Brooklyn’s Engine 284 or Staten Island’s Engine 161 were to close, the safety of my constituents would have been sorely compromised,” said Malliotakis.
Engine 284, located on 79th Street in Dyker Heights, had also been targeted for closure. All of the firehouses were spared from having to close.
“The support of our firefighters, fire officers, EMTs, paramedics, and fire inspectors is a distinct honor and a privilege. I hold their endorsement in high regard,” she said.
