Forecasters said Friday that a powerful hybrid hurricane/ nor’easter will impact New York City early next week.

The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for Brooklyn and the rest of the Metro area. The outlook calls for a major coastal storm with heavy rainfall, high winds, coastal flooding and beach erosion” starting late Sunday and peaking Tuesday, October 30.

Forecasters say there is even a chance of snow – depending on Hurricane Sandy’s interaction with a storm chugging in from the west and freezing air streaming south from the north. The weather service has coined the term “Frankenstorm” to reflect the merging of the storms right before Halloween.

And the full moon — when tides are high — increases coastal flooding potential, NOAA forecasts say. Officials are planning for subway flooding and mass power outages. According to Weather.com, forecasters say it has “all the earmarks of a billion-dollar storm.”

The storm “will ultimately depend of the eventual track and evolution” of Hurricane Sandy, the National Weather service says, and its interaction with a low-pressure system approaching the East Coast, which could boost its’ impact. Forecasters say the huge storm could make landfall anywhere from Philadelphia to New Jersey.

Several models on how the storm could behave are beginning to converge, with the liklihood of the storm simply moving out to sea diminishing. The lingering effects may even disrupt national elections.
