Although they’re officially a part of Sunset Park, according to the City Council lines, the Bay Ridge Towers have been symbolic to the neighborhood for as long as anyone can possibly remember.

On October 6, therefore, Lowen’s Pharmacy, at 6902 Third Avenue, which has been serving the community for over 60 years, hosted an event for the residents and families to celebrate the Towers’ 40th anniversary.

“All the pharmacists and employees were at the party,” said Linda Orlando, former recording secretary of the Bay Ridge Community Council. “They gave away bags with information and gifts. They gave away coffee cups with Lowen’s Pharmacy on it. They gave away prizes to winners: Coffee makers and electrical appliances, and lots of photographs were taken of the residents.”

Along with members of the board, the pharmacy organized a DJ Dance Party, as well as face painting, and provided a popcorn machine, cotton candy, an 11-item lunch menu, raffles, and many giveaways for the over 300 residents who attended the event.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on October 6 , the Bay Ridge Towers’ courtyard became a festive venue.

“We were very happy with the turn out,” said a representative of Lowens in an email. “Lowen’s would like to have another event with the Towers next year.”

The Bay Ridge Towers opened in 1972. “The board of directors and members of the management have always gone to great lengths to make the buildings a safe, clean, comfortable place to live. I hope to be here many more years,” Orlando, who has lived at the Towers for 38 years, concluded.

Presently, more than 800 families reside in the Towers, and many of them have lived there for over 20 years, like Orlando, some since the buildings first opened their doors.
