High School Beat: Bishop Kearney’s Gallagher sisters, O’Grady dominate at Mayor’s Cup track event
Over 350 runners from 48 teams representing the Public School Athletic League, Catholic High School Athletic Association and numerous independent school leagues competed in last weekend’s prestigious Mayor’s Cup Cross-Country race over the rugged hills of Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.
And when all was said and done, Brooklyn’s own Theresa “Tessy” Gallagher of Bishop Kearney High School beat them all, sprinting to the front from the start and holding off the pack at the finish to earn the distinction of being crowned 2012 Mayor’s Cup Champion.
Not far behind the gold medalist was her sister, Jackie Gallagher, who took home the third-place medal. Finishing fifth overall was Kearney’s Kailey O’Grady, giving the Brooklyn school a near-sweep of the top podium spots at the annual event.
