A Fashionable Weekend In Brooklyn

It’s only October, but fashion designers were more than ready to feature their spring/summer 2013 collections during the four-day-long Brooklyn Fashion Weekend in Industry City.

“It gets better and better every year!” exclaimed  Shálik Harford of I Style Starz Media at opening night on Thursday, September 27. “Manhattan, you’re done!” he continued. Brooklyn is, “The coolest fashion place in the world with chic designers who know how to get it done,” he contended.

Opening night was a success, with eco-friendly designers such as Melanie Frazer Hart from Callula Lillibelle, William Maxwell High School students, and Sohung Tong exhibiting fantastic, colorful outfits redesigned from old clothes.

Purple, aqua, beige and hot pink dominated the runway when The Callula Lillibelle collection, designed by Frazer Hart, and inspired by actress and Academy Award-winning producer Christy Cashman came on.

“The collection is composed of 23 outfits of eco-friendly clothing made only from organic silk and organic cotton which delivers contemporary silhouettes for the modern, multifaceted woman,” explained Frazer Hart.

According to the designers’ statement describing their brand, Callula is “designed to embrace and enhance the female figure in all its forms, whether that means va-va-voluptuous, sensuously slender or something in between.”

Cashman commented on the Callula Lillibelle Collection. “The entire collection is comfortable, but the evening gowns are very much like walking around in yummy, silky, flowy fabrics that feel like they’re part of you,” she remarked.

People applauded and cheered at Sohung’s designs, handmade in New York, and welcomed the “upcoming designers,” also known as the young innovative students from Maxwell High School and their educators who were present, supporting the teens.

“I was really so proud to be there. It’s so cool and cutting-edge and fresh,” Cashman added about Thursday night. “The theme of repurposing and resourcefulness and organic materials is so important.”

Saturday night came and highlighted handbags by Torregrossa Fashions, a Brooklyn-based company that sells its products nationwide, including to celebrities like Nicky Hilton. Designer from the Philippines Joyce Pilarsky, as well as Melissa Squire from Saskatchewan, Canada had a chance to present their work.

The Torregrossa handbag collection, with an office in Dyker Heights, was founded two years ago by sisters Bridget, 28, and Megan, 25, with the idea to “bridge the gap between high-end designer labels and less expensive, mass produced labels, without neglecting quality and design.”

The sisters were delighted to attend their first runway show. “We are extremely excited for Brooklyn Fashion week to showcase the Torregrossa handbag collection in a high energy show of sophisticated luxury,” they said.

Bridget spoke of their opportunity to make their bags “speak for themselves,” and stand out at this “unbelievable experience [BK fashion weekend].”

Fashion Weekend ended with Brooklyn designers and a closing party hosted by XEX Magazine. We all look forward to setting these newest and unique trends!
