Bishop Ford High School is slated to celebrate its 50th anniversary this month. Opened in 1962, the school has played a huge role in shaping the surrounding community, educating over 10,000 students during its half a century history.

Eileen Long Chelales, Bishop Ford’s director of development, says the faculty and staff are elated over the anniversary. “I think that when you reach a milestone of 50 years, it’s an important and historical time to celebrate,” she remarked.

While Chelales believes the school’s reputation, faith-based education, and safe learning conditions have helped give it success, she says the Bishop Ford community is not satisfied with only 50 years. “We hope we can build on that in the future and have many, many more years,” she said.

Board of Trustees member Miles Davis, graduate of the class of 1967, believes it’s a few unique traits that have made the school successful.

“We’re very important to the community,” Davis contended. “We’re giving people the option to choose the type of education for students. They’re able to choose a faith-based school where safety is guaranteed. It’s a great thing to be able to celebrate.“

Davis believes the school has become more than a place for education, but is an essential cornerstone to the Brooklyn community, and it is this that has kept its doors open while many other Catholic schools have closed. “A lot of schools are closing, during these hard times, but we’re still here,” he said.

The celebration will take place on September 29. A mass, entitled Faith in our Future, will be held at the high school, 500 19th Street, at 4 p.m., followed by a dinner at Steiner Studios.
