Four police officers from the 62nd Precinct were honored as Cops of the Month for nabbing two high-profile perps for a murder and sexual assault at the Precinct’s Community Council meeting on September 18, held at the station house.

Police Officer Jean Innocent and Police Officer Raymond Orsini were awarded for arresting a murder suspect. The crime took place on Saturday, July 14 at 4:10 a.m. outside of a bar, La Parranda, located on 86th Street near 24th Avenue, where a man was stabbed to death.

Innocent and Orsini, who speak Spanish, developed a dialogue with witnesses when they investigated the scene and remained in contact. Nearly two weeks later, Innocent received a phone call at 4:45 a.m. from one of the homicide witnesses.

“He was screaming that he saw two guys that stabbed the victim playing basketball in Seth Low Park,” he recalled. “I didn’t know what to think, I was still half asleep.”

Quick thinking Innocent phoned the precinct and his partner, Orsini, and raced to the basketball court, where a positive ID was made.

“When I got to the park, the perp was already apprehended,” Orsini said.

“It feels great, it was a nice experience,” Innocent said of his honor.

The other top cops for the month of September were Lieutenant Steven Controneo and Police Officer John Wygand, who arrested a suspect in a sexual assault.

On Saturday, July 28 at 2 a.m., an Asian female exited the train station at 86th Street and 26th Avenue when she was approached by the perp, who knocked her to the ground, forcibly touched her and fled the scene.

Wygand and Controneo, who supervises the midnight to 8 a.m. shift, promptly responded to the scene and conducted a canvass. Controneo apprehended the suspect and the victim made a positive ID at Lutheran Medical Center, where she was receiving medical attention.
