Fort Hamilton Pirates plunder Tottenville Tigers for season opener

“I can’t remember ever winning here,” said Tottenville head coach Jim Munson on his big 32-0 win over Fort Hamilton.

For this season’s home opener, Fort Hamilton was routed by one of Staten Island’s traditionally strong PSAL teams, as a number of the Tigers sat on the sidelines nursing their wounds from last week’s scrimmage with Poly Prep. For the Tigers, who have won three PSAL city titles over the past seven years, the team found themselves in unfamiliar territory with their first ever shutout at home to open their season.

Despite being shorthanded, this basic sophomore and junior team held Tottenville to a scoreless tie for the first quarter until mid way in the second quarter. The Pirates then broke at the 5:48 mark when quarterback Brandon Barnes found a streaking Malique Belford downfield on a 70 yard pass play for the first score of the game.

Tottenville quickly added to their 7-0 lead in the third quarter on a 20 yard field goal after the Tigers held the Pirates on a fourth and one. Tottenville lightening struck again as Barnes once more connected with wide receiver Belford, this time on a 48 yard pass play to close out the third quarter to give the Pirates a 17-0 lead.

After blocking a punt at the 20 yard line mid way in the fourth quarter, it took the Pirates just three plays from scrimmage as Syracuse-bound running back August Edwards waltzed through the Tiger defense from the 4 yard line to put the Pirates up 24-0. Following a hard hit on Tiger quarterback Adrian Maldonado for a fumble, Pirate quarterback Brandon Barnes cut across the grain on a 7 yard scamper for the final score of 32-0.

“They’re a well coached team; they’ll be back”, said Coach Munson of his Fort Hamilton opponent. On the loss, Fort Hamilton head coach Dan Perez stated, “We have to improve on both sides of the ball. We’ve got to learn from this game and get better; it’s only week one. A bunch of our kids are banged up and in the meanwhile the younger kids have to step up.”
