Good morning. Today is the 243rd day of the year. The lead story in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle of August 30, 1902, is headlined, “Mount Whitney Climbed by a Brooklyn Party.” The story says three Brooklyn mountaineers, accompanied by a professor from Columbia University, reached Visalla, Calif., a few days beforehand after having been on the mountain for two weeks.

Well-known people who were born today include comedian Lewis Black of “The Daily Show,” actress Cameron Diaz (“Charlie’s Angels,” “My Best Friend’s Wedding”), actress Peggy Lipton (“the Mod Squad”) and Olympic skiier Jean-Claude Killy.
