The New York City Districting Commission has begun its first round of public hearings ahead of its once-a-decade redrawing of the city’s electoral lines.

The commission held its first public hearing at Brooklyn Borough Hall on Monday evening.

Hearings in the other boroughs will be held through next week. The first draft of the commission’s proposed plan is scheduled to be released next month.

Dick Dadey, the executive director of Citizens Union, says the most recent Census results mean this round of redistricting is likely to create more significant changes than those the city saw 10 years ago.

He’s urging the commission not to make decisions based on the impact they’ll have on elected officials currently in office.
