NY Methodist Hospital schedules a wide range of events in August

The week of Aug. 1-7 is recognized as World Breastfeeding Week. To mark this annual global event, New York Methodist Hospital will host World Breastfeeding Day on Wednesday, Aug. 1. The event will feature free educational materials and giveaways, and an NYM certified lactation consultant will be available to answer questions, from 10 a.m.–1 p.m. in the Carrington Pavilion Lobby. The hospital offers a free Breastfeeding Support Group for new mothers, whether or not they delivered their babies at NYM. It meets weekly on Tuesdays from 2:30–3:30 p.m. The Breastfeeding Support Group focuses on providing encouragement and information for mothers and their newborns, from birth to three months old. A certified lactation consultant leads the group. The meetings take place in the Hospital’s Wesley House, Rooms 3K-C. Call 718-780-5081 for more information.

According to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, an estimated six million people (or one in every 50) in the United States have an unruptured brain aneurysm. New York Methodist Hospital offers highly advanced technology and expert physicians to provide services for the treatment of aneurysms and reversal of strokes. NYM also offers a free support group for patients who have suffered from brain aneurysms or subarachnoid hemorrhages (SAH). The Brain Aneurysm Support Group will meet on Saturday, Aug. 11, from 9–11 a.m. in the Hospital’s Executive Dining Room. Pre-registration is required. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a disease indicated by high blood pressure in the arteries that supply blood to the lungs. PH affects people of all ages, races and ethnic backgrounds. New York Methodist Hospital hosts a free Pulmonary Hypertension Support Group.This group connects people with PH and educates them on treatments and new developments for the disease. The next meeting will be held on Monday, Aug. 13, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Hospital’s Wesley House, Room 7A. Pre-registration is required.  Call 718-780-5614 for more information.

Hepatitis C (HVC) is an infection caused by a virus that attacks the liver and leads to inflammation. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that over four million Americans are infected with HVC. New York Methodist Hospital hosts a Hepatitis C Support Group for people living with HVC. Patients’ loved ones are welcome to join the meetings as well. The group is directed by a physician specializing in liver disorders. The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 15, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Hospital’s Executive Dining Room.  Call 718-780-5367 for more information.

Obesity is an epidemic that impacts over nine million Americans. More and more people who are affected by obesity are seeking information about surgical weight reduction. New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Surgical Weight Reduction Information Seminar and Support Group. This month the group will meet on Wednesday, Aug. 8, from 6–7:30 p.m. and on Thursday, Aug. 23, from 5:30–7:30 p.m. During the first 30 minutes of the seminar, a surgeon will conduct an information session for individuals who are interested in learning about the surgery. A 90-minute support group meeting, open to pre- and post-operative patients, will follow the information session.
