Officials vow: Boro Park swastika painters will be caught

BOROUGH PARK — Officials say that street cameras have caught footage of the perpetrators of an overnight hate crime in the Orthodox Jewish neighborhood of Borough Park — and vow to catch the perps.

Local residents woke up this morning to find swastikas painted on at least a half-dozen buildings throughout the neighborhood, according to Council Member David G. Greenfield, who is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the vandals.

Greenfield said in a statement that the swastikas were discovered early this morning spray painted on at least six buildings in the vicinity of 16th Avenue, including a synagogue, a public school and several businesses. The NYPD is investigating and is reviewing security footage from local businesses.

“Once again, we find ourselves under attack from individuals who think nothing of spreading hate and fear throughout the community. This is absolutely unacceptable, especially in an area that is home to so many Holocaust survivors,” Greenfield said on Friday.

Public Advocate Bill de Blasio said in a statement, “Cameras on the streets have proven their worth by catching footage of the perpetrators, and they will face consequences for what they’ve done.”
