Brooklyn Today: June 1, 2012
Good morning. Today is the 153rd day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle for June 1, 1902, wrote about the plans for the “third bridge” between Brooklyn and Manhattan. The bridge, the article revealed, had now been given a name: the Manhattan Bridge. Plans were presented before the Board of Estimate, which at that time was the governing body of the city but which was abolished in the 1990s. The first and second bridges were, of course, the Brooklyn and Williamsburg bridges.
Well-known people who were born today include singer Pat Boone (“Love Letters in the Sand”), actor Morgan Freeman (“Million Dollar Baby,” “The Shawshank Redemption,” “Driving Miss Daisy”), actor Andy Griffith (“The Andy Griffith Show”), singer Alanis Morisette and guitarist Ron Wood.
Tomorrow from 8 to 10 p.m., Society HAE will take over the Brooklyn Museum’s parking lot for its “Beats, Blocks and Brooklyn” block party. The same event helped set the museum’s one-day attendance record of 24,000 in July 2010. Attendees can expect to dance to everything from Biggie to the Beastie Boys. … In Bensonhurst, this weekend will be Liberty Weekend, sponsored by the Friends of Historic New Utrecht, on the grounds of the historic New Utrecht Reformed Church. The event will feature an outdoor band concert, Revolutionary and Civil War re-enactors, a Civil War cannon, historical displays, lectures, ceremonies at the famous Liberty Pole and tours of the old New Utrecht Cemetery. The church is at 18th Avenue and 84th Street.
