Markowitz channels revolutionary general at park event
Washington Park (formerly J.J. Byrne Park) was central to the Battle of Brooklyn in 1776. Last Friday, the Revolutionary War’s spirit was in play, with Gen. Israel Putnam — channeled by Borough President Marty Markowitz — returning to the scene, this time to celebrate a peaceful event — a ribbon-cutting marking completion of the third phase of the park’s renovation. Also pictured are City Council members Stephen Levin (as Gen. John Sullivan) and Brad Lander (as Gen. William Alexander); Brooklyn Parks Commissioner Kevin Jeffrey (as Gen. George Washington); Old Stone House Executive Director Kim Maier; and area children. Photo by Kathry Kirk
