BROOKLYN  You may want to hide these party gift bags from the kids.

Brooklyn sex shop Babeland is inviting moms to “ditch the sippy cups for sex toys and let loose” this Thursday night, as part of a Brooklyn alternative, literary “Edgy Mother’s Day” event.

Lest you think this is some lowbrow Brooklyn sex party, think again: respected authors Marian Fontana and Elizabeth Laura Nelson will be reading about sex and motherhood while moms sip “Babeland Bubbly.”

Writer and performer Fontana has had articles in The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Parenting and Martha Stewart magazine, and she is a founding member of the 9-11 Families Association. Her most recent book, "A Widows Walk" was on the New York Times best-selling memoir list and received accolades all around.

A writer for xoJane, Nelson is also “an actress, a teacher, a blogger, an organizing consultant, and a breastfeeding advocate.” She writes on her Facebook page that she’ll be reading “a short essay about mothers, porn, and Popsicles.” The rumor is that Fontana will be reading “a hilarious tale of a sex-toy party.”

In any case, the night will involve a raffle, and the first fifteen moms to arrive will receive gift bags – filled with items you definitely don’t want the kids to find.

The event takes place Thursday, May 17, from 7–9 p.m. at Babeland, 462 Bergen St. in Brooklyn. Edgy Mother’s Day is sponsored by Brooklyn Reading Works.
