Just out: Bike-share stations will ax auto parking
Now we know why the city shrouded the locations of its bike-share stations in such secrecy.
For New York City motorists hunting for a place to park, hell is about to become even hotter.
The city on Friday released a map showing 420 of a planned 600 bike-share stations in Manhattan and Northern Brooklyn; sites for Brooklyn community districts 6, 8 and 9 (covering Park Slope, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Prospect Heights and Crown Heights) were not yet posted, with DOT insisting that “detailed site selection and planning work” was continuing there.
In many Brooklyn neighborhoods, most of the bike share stations will go on streets — not on sidewalks — grabbing spaces from parking lanes. This parking-space seizure was orchestrated by Janette Sadik-Khan, the Bloomberg administration’s anti-auto Department of Transportation commissioner, who previously eliminated countless spaces through a citywide intersection “neckdown” program. DOT says its selections were based on the input of thousands of New Yorkers.
