Parents Continue Protest at Cobble Hill School

A “human chain” of dissent was supposed to surround P.S. 29 in Cobble Hill on Friday, April 27, the day after a contentious meeting of the PTA with the School Construction 
Authority (SCA). Perhaps it was fatigue from the night before or the blustery weather, but when the evening of the protest arrived there were almost as many camera people and reporters outside the school as there were students and parents, and work crews repairing the school’s exterior just went about their business. The PTA was victorious in getting the SCA to delay mortar raking until the summer, but asbestos removal will continue, officials said at the meeting. “We’re here,” parent Lauren Gottlieb informed the press, “because we don’t like the way the SCA does business.” Others said that construction dust in classrooms is dangerous to children’s health. Parents are asking that all work stop until summer recess.
